Learn more about Aliso Viejo
On July 1st, 2001, Aliso Viejo became Orange County’s 34th city. The name means “old alder” or “old sycamore”. It was Orange County’s first planned community and targeted middle and upper-middle income homebuyers. The land was originally granted to Juan Avila by the Mexican government in 1842. However, in the 1890’s, the Moutlon family took title to it. Then in 1976, 6,600 acres of it was purchased by the Mission Viejo Company for a new planned community which is now part of Aliso Viejo. 2,600 acres of the land was used for Wood Canyons Wilderness Park and 800 acres were designated for recreation, education and other community ventures. March 1982 was when the first residential lots became available and the first set of residents began to arrive in November, a short 8 months later.
As of 1990, Aliso Viejo had only 7,600 residents. Meanwhile homes, apartments and the like were going up so fast that there were waiting lists for more. Within 10 years, the population grew to 32,000 people which made it the city with the highest growth in Orange County. Today it ranks as one of the safest places to live in the United States. There are fruitful local employment opportunities and residents enjoy city history, shopping, fine restaurants and many other amenities. It fits well with the tagline of the city which is, “Live Life Inspired.”
The median household income is $54,073 as of 2019.
Population: Approximately 50,663 as of 2019
