Anaheim

^{While Anaheim is mostly known for Disneyland which was established in 1955, there was a group of German immigrants who first “put Anaheim on the map” over a 100 years ago. These 50 families were mechanics, carpenters and craftsmen but grape and wine-making was their purpose. 47 wineries and scores of vineyards developed as a result of their hard work. The colony was located on 1,165 acres of land and eventually got the name Anaheim from both the Santa Ana river and “heim” which means home in German.}

^{Anaheim is also known as the state’s wine capital. Yaqui Indians from Mexico were among the first to be hired by the farmers. They were hired to dig ditches and later, Chinese laborers were hired to work the crops. Eventually the Chinese cultivated their own community. That community is what we know of today as downtown Anaheim. They went from being crop laborers to barbers, tailors, merchants, laundry operators etc.}

^{Besides wineries, people also invested in citrus and for 25 years, it was the largest wine producing city in California. Unfortunately, a disease infected the grape vines in 1884 and the industry was destroyed. Soon enough, the Santa Ana (I-5) Freeway opened and Disneyland was established, tourism became the top industry for the city. Anaheim is now the largest and most populated city in Orange County. With more than $1 billion in city assets, it’s also the wealthiest city in Orange County.}

^{It’s also home to more than 1,000 firms making it the leading manufacturing center in the county. Besides that, the city is also native to Anaheim Ducks, the hockey team. The city also houses the Angel Stadium which is home of the Los Angeles Angels baseball team.}
