Learn more about Coto de Caza
Coto de Caza was claimed by Spanish ranchers over 200 years ago. These days it is a land of rich vegetation but back in those days, it was mostly grassy hills. It is one of California’s most exclusively planned communities and one of the oldest cities in California. The name means “hunting preserve”.
The landscape will full of deer and game birds which were a major attraction to hunters. One of the people attracted to the area was Ernest Bryant, Jr who established the Bryant Ranch in the 1930s. After a time, that land was sold to a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad for about $5 million. It was then that Coto de Caza made a comeback as a private hunting and riding club. This club opened up in 1964 and was only exclusively available to a certain clientele.
John Wayne and William Shatner were among the first people who were given membership to this club. It was later publicized as a meeting and retreat venue for executives and before long, the Coto Valley Country Club emerged in 1970. It was a world-class establishment complete with a swimming pool, fully stocked gym, bowling alley and racquetball courts. Eventually, club members wanted to live in the area and the full development of Coto de Caza began. 1975 brought with it the first homes to the community. They were built in The Village.
Within a decade, the area grew into 5,000 manicured acres and the next 15 years brought another growth spurt. It was promoted as the best way to “live in the country, not far from the city”. All this time, Coto de Caza had shifted ownership several times but the vision of the community never deterred. After the bankruptcy of Pennsylvania Railroad’s, control was given to Florida-based Arvida Corporation and in collaboration with Chevron and City Federal Savings & Loan, the construction of 6,000 new homes was financed. The modern development of Coto de Caza had begun!
Coto de Caza grew to its 45 branded neighborhoods between 1996 and 2003 and is now home to executives and movie stars. It further attained popularity from the 2006 show “The Real Housewives of Orange County”. The city hosts an annual Fourth of July Parade which gains a lot of love and appreciation from the community. It adds to the small town feel of the city which was officially completed in 2000. There are about 4,000 homes in Coto de Caza. Offering wild open spaces, amazing hiking trails and the old-styled general store really add to the hometown feel of Coto de Caza.
