Learn more about Laguna Niguel
Located in the south-eastern portion of Orange County, the city of Laguna Niguel got its name from the Spanish word Laguna (for Lagoon) and Niguili (the name of a Native American Village which was once located near Aliso Creek.) In 1821, California was still under Mexican ownership and rule and it was during this time that lots of rancheros emerged, including Rancho Niguel. Juan Avila, who was a resident of San Juan Capistrano, received this land through a Mexican grant in 1842 and when California became a US territory in 1848, he successfully kept ownership of the title. Juan was still the owner up until 1865. Then, in 1895, Rancho Niguel became a part of the Moulton Company and over 19,000 acres of the land was eventually under their control.
The land was acquired by the Laguna Niguel Corporation later on in 1959 with a purpose to develop a master-planned city. Before this time, the land was mostly used as a sheep ranch.
An elaborate 7,100 acre community plan was developed by Victor Gruen and Associates and in 1961, land sales began in Laguna Terrace and Monarch Bay subdivisions. Ten years later, in 1971, Avco Community Developer retained the Laguna Niguel Plan and development started in accordance with the original Master Plan.
When the area was still being developed, the Laguna Niguel Homeowners Association played the role of advisor to the Orange County Board of Supervisors and over time, that association became the Laguna Niguel Community Council. By 1986, residents wanted more dominance over issues in the area and began the process of turning the area into a city. This became real on November 7th, 1989 when majority of the voters chose to incorporate this area and on December 1st, 1989, the city was incorporated.
Laguna Niguel has designated approximately one third of its land as open space. This includes Crown Valley Community Park is where most recreational programs and activities take place. This park is also home to the Niguel Botanical Preserve which attracts quarter of a million attendants annually. There are neighborhood parks, community park, county regional parks and many more areas designated for the community as well as The Laguna Niguel Skate & Soccer Park – a popular local spot for skateboarding and soccer players.
All of these amenities, and the city being fairly close to Orange County’s beaches, make Laguna Niguel an idea place to live. It is one of the most loved cities in Orange County.
The median household income is $103,910 as of 2019.
Population: Approximately 65,808 as of 2019
