Learn more about Lake Forest

This city was originally referred to as Rancho Canada De Los Alisos (the Valley of the Sycamores). A Mexican Land Grant was given to Don Jose Serrano who settled in the area in 1846, after which the area was known as El Toro. This name was derived from all the bulls that roamed his ranch. Don Jose and his family retained ownership of this land for more than a century but when financial hardships hit his family, the land was sold for private interests.

Dwight Whiting planted 400 acres of eucalyptus trees in the 1900s. These trees were fast-growing and played a role in lessening the lumber shortage at the time. And in the 1960s, Occidental Petroleum which was a master developer, started to create a master-planned community around the abundance of trees and man-made lakes. It was those same trees, along with two man-made lakes in the area, that led to the name Lake Forest.
