Santa Ana is the 57th most populous city in the United States. In 1769, an expedition led by Don Gaspar de Portola, came upon the beautiful valley and river. He named the area Santa Ana to honor Saint Anne on July 26th. This name would lend to the now Santa Ana Freeway, Santa Ana Mountains and Santa Ana Winds.
A Spanish grant was awarded to Jose Antonio Yorba and his nephew Juan Peralta in 1810. They used it for cattle grazing and farmland. Later, in 1869, 70 acres was purchased from the Yorba family by William H Spurgeon. He planned for a town on the vast acreage of land. This new town was named Santa Ana.
As the area grew with new arrivals so did the local industries which now include electronic parts, financial and manufacturing businesses.
In 1889, Orange County and Los Angeles were separated and Santa Ana was named the County Seat. The city is now a major city in the state of California and is the financial and governmental center of the OC. Santa Ana is also the 11th largest city in California, encompassing a total of 27.2 square miles.
The median household income is $66,145 as of 2019.
